How to Choose a Good Nail Polish?

If you are fond of changing your nail polish, it is important that you know how to choose the right nail polish. Trusting the wrong brands can lead your nails to weaken and it just might even expose you to harmful chemicals.

Avoid nail polish which contains the big three.

If you want to ensure that you are protecting yourself from toxic and harmful substances, you should check your nail polish for three things. These are formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate(DBP).

Exposure to this by way of inhalation alone within just 15-20 minutes can already cause a variety of reactions such as dizziness, skin reactions, fatigue, breathing problems and many others. With these chemicals in your nail polish exposes you to absorb these toxic substances, which are also known to be carcinogenic. DBP is also even linked to reproductive problems in pregnant women who are exposed to this. So the next time you hit the store or visit your salon carefully choose those safe varieties of nail polish.

Opt for organic.

Did you know that there are nail polishes that are organic? Yes, there are companies that actually develop organic nail polish. It does not contain the harmful chemicals that are present in typical nail polish, and it is even safe to use for pregnant mothers.

Opt for water-based nail polish.

Water –based nail polish is more advisable compared to solvent-based one because these are less toxic. These are also gentler on the nails because it is less drying and harsh. Water-based nail polish also does not produce volatile organic compounds which can be observed by strong smells.

Keep it longer with Mineral-based nail polish.

Although it does not contain the same range of safety as its water-based counterpart, mineral-based nail polish has more staying power. This means that you avoid getting those chips that would cause you to constantly change your nail polish in a month. This can be damaging to the nails in the long run. In fact it is advised that you should only change your nail polish twice in a month at most.

Choose your color according to the occasion.

When you choose a nail polish, make sure that you do so based on the occasion that you are going because these too can communicate what you are as a person. For instance, if you are going for an interview, it is advisable to choose nude or neutral colors. For parties, you are safe to go with bolder hues.

Choose nail polish with added formulations.

Aside from getting the extensive variations of color, also choose a nail polish that contains a nail strengthening formula. Those who have dry, brittle and sensitive nails can certainly benefit from this without depriving themselves from wearing their favorite colors.

Choose your nail polish according to your skin tone.

If you have a lighter skin color, dark colored tones would give nails that oomph. This will make it stand out more. So when getting a manicure or a pedicure, choose those nail polish that have a blue base. Striking reds can also enhance the look of your hands. For those dark-skinned individuals, you have a wider range to choose from because every color is appropriate. But you should avoid colors that come close to your skin, such as bronzes and light browns.
